Michigan's Upper Peninsula

We spent several days riding west across the U.P.

We crossed over the Mackinac Bridge in the RV and began in St. Ignace.

Our first day was riding on the northern shore of Lake Michigan, passing miles and miles of wild beaches. We met a few other riders, most going east but a few headed west like us. We spent that night in the Michihistrigan bar & campgrounds and I must say the "Yooper" mosquitos are nothing to sneeze at. And we had a fabulous pizza from the bar that night. We got our first glimpse of Lake Superior on June 22nd, at Munising. that day was also significant because it proved the old bike adage, "some days you ride into the wind, some days you have to pedal hard to go downhill." On the 24th, we rode from Champion to Baraga State Park Campground. That day the riding was great because the wind abated and we just flew along on nice roads with little traffic. We went to see the Lakenenland roadside sculpture garden and the Bishop Baraga (The Snowshoe Priest) Shrine overlooking Lake Superior. On the 25th, we fought our way from Baraga to Ironwood on a day with intermittent rain and a crummy narrow shoulder, but on the bright side, we saw the largest Native American statue of Hiawatha.

A final thought: there are entirely too many mosquitos in the U.P., but we ate some pasties and ice cream along the way, so it's all good -- mmmmm
