Ironwood to Ashland WI: on June 26 we crossed into Wisconsin from the UP. it was generally a good ride albeit a bit windy and rainy. And by a bit windy, I mean a 20 MPH wind coming exactly in the opposite direction. We connected with Vince and Betty Ament in Ashland. Betty is Susan's cousin. They hosted us for 2 nights since we took a day off to rest. We went to the Benoit Cheese Shop, The Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center, I met Jim and John Coffey downtown (After chatting for 10 minutes we decided we are long-lost relatives) and had wonderful food prepared by Vince and Betty.
The next day Ashland to Couderay. Flat tire fresh water fishing hall of fame saw a black bear and porcupine stayed with Jim and Laura Bonifas on chief lake burgers, brats, big bonfire Uecker the smelly dog
Pancakes and sausages for breakfast. sunny. nice day. just a great ride to the Dongola campground in Webster
Alpha WI to Mora, MN. nothing special about the day, just a solid day of riding but we did cross into the great state of Minnesota. We stayed at the Fish Lake Resort, known far and wide for the antarctic quality of their camp showers.
Mora to Sartell. Another great day of riding and we ended up connecting with the Mississippi River in St Cloud and rode north and crossed the Mississippi River via the Sartell Bridge. We stayed with my mom‘s cousin Chuck and Kathy Bonifas. They were excellent hosts and Chuck helped Don fix a few things and do some RV maintenance. This is as best we can tell the halfway point of our trip. We have ridden about 1,900 miles which has to be close to the halfway point and crossing the Mississippi seems to be the logical and emotional halfway point.
I was also able to visit with my friend Anneliese from KU and her fiance Alyssa in the Chanhassen area - it was great to reconnect!
Thanks again to Ann(e?) from Escanaba who took our picture at the halfway point!
